May 29: International Day of UN Peacekeepers – Why it matters to all of us
Today, we join the global community in honouring the dedication and sacrifice of United Nations peacekeepers who work in some of the world’s most challenging environments to protect civilians, uphold the rule of law, and lay the groundwork for lasting peace. From supporting inclusive policies to promoting justice in our communities, peace begins with people.
As signatories to the UN Publisher’s Compact, we recognize that this year’s theme, “Fit for the Future: Building Better Together,” speaks directly to the mission we support as publishers of the Journal of Community Safety and Well-Being (JCSWB).
Peacekeeping isn’t only a global mission—it’s a local one. As publishers, we believe that evidence-informed dialogue and cross-sector collaboration are essential to building safer, more just, and more resilient communities. The JCSWB provides a platform for exchanging knowledge that strengthens community safety, supports inclusive institutions, and advances UN Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
Through our publishing work, we aim to:
- Elevate research and practice that addresses the social determinants of safety and well-being
- Connect thought leaders across policing, public health, mental health, and social care
- Encourage innovation in collaborative community safety strategies
- Support knowledge that bridges local experience with global impact
As we remember the more than 4,200 peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, we reaffirm our commitment to publishing for peace—to ensure that those working on the frontlines of safety and social justice have access to the knowledge they need to build better, together.
